Midwest Bird & Exotic Animal Hospital began as a vision of Dr. Susan Brown in the summer of 1985. Along with Drs. Richard Nye and Scott McDonald, the hospital opened in January 1986. The hospital was the first of its kind in the U.S. to treat avian and exotic animals exclusively. Midwest Bird & Exotic Animal Hospital is owned by Drs. Besty Clarkson and Dianne Poliakoff.

The veterinarians maintain active memberships in various professional associations. Each doctor acquires at least 30 hours of continuing education each year. The following are some of the associations in which they participate:
